The legendary five-division world boxing champion, Tommy “The Hit Man” Hearns, is missing at age 67, and his family is deeply worried about his well-being and cognitive health.
The Crisis
Hearns’ Southfield estate, which he owned outright, was recently foreclosed upon and auctioned due to unpaid property taxes.
According to his daughter, Natasha Hearns-Barnes, Hearns is suffering from mental deficiency and was unaware of the foreclosure and eviction notices. She also documented the squalid conditions her father was living in prior to his disappearance, including black mold and collapsing ceilings at his former home.
Hearns-Barnes attempted to gain guardianship but was rejected by a probate court over a missing zip code.
She claims her half-brother, also named Thomas Hearns, has spirited their father away to an unknown location, and attempts to reach the son have been fruitless.
The Fraud and Financial Ruin
Despite earning over $40 million in his career, Hearns was already financially depleted by relatives and poor investments, forced to auction off memorabilia in 2010 to satisfy a tax lien.
The loss of his home was attributed to a multi-year fraud scheme perpetrated by a man named Jack Wolfe, who is now in prison for similar crimes. In 2014, Wolfe used shell companies to file a fraudulent $90,000 mortgage against Hearns’ $1 million home, then foreclosed on it. The text suggests Hearns’ signatures on the paperwork were likely forged.
A Ray of Hope
The county’s auction of Hearns’ home generated $126,000 more than the tax debt. A lawyer believes there is still a chance to recover this money for Hearns, and possibly even challenge the home’s sale.
The immediate and critical problem, however, remains that Tommy Hearns has disappeared and cannot be located to pursue these legal avenues.
